Drive-by entertainment
I have a lot of great memories riding in the car with the radio cranked up. There is the time my father turned up the volume and sang merrily along to "Love Potion No. 9." There is the other time when my mother drove in circles on the cul-de-sac where our house stood just so we could hear all of Eric Clapton's "Layla." Of course, I could never forget when my sister and I roared out the lyrics to Sheryl Crow's "If it makes You Happy."
There have been many great memories in the car but the ones where I laugh the hardest, sing the loudest, and remember the fondest all have my sister, Kim, seated next to me.
Providing car entertainment began when we were kids. Kim and I were fond of reciting Fairytale Theater's
"The Frog Prince" in its entirety.
As we grew older and Kim got her own car or drove our parents', it was always great to sit in the passenger seat while she was behind the wheel because Kim would uncover all the great radio stations. And she had the best CDs.
We don't drive together as much anymore. Kim has her own children to drive around now and most of the time I am the sole occupant in my car. This doesn't mean we have lost our touch, however. A few nights ago, I drove Kim back to her house after dinner with our folks and she started to giggle, recalling a scene from the movie, "Bridesmaids."
"OOOOHHHH....YOUUUUUU...DOOOOOOO!" she sang.
As if on cue, I crooned out, "HELEN KNOWS THE OWNER!!!!"
We laughed hard. I laughed so much, I missed the turn to my sister's street and had to take a longer route.
Kim and I should go on the road and sell tickets. In my mind, our act is priceless. Actually, scratch that; all I really need is a set of wheels, a stretch of asphalt and my best friend sitting beside me.
