A chance in the limelight

These were no ordinary duels. It started with a simple face off and progressed with a swat of the hand, a tumble to the blue plastic mat, a vice-like hug, and then a solemn arm raise to declare a victor.  Some of these bouts featured tears, which spurred a comforting hug from a coach. My nephew Colin, however, was untouched by the magnitude of these spectacles. In fact, he beamed throughout the entire wrestling tournament.

At age 6 and with legs the width of popsicle sticks, Colin may not appear to be your typical wrestler. You should not, however, underestimate him. He has agility and quickness and with two older siblings, Colin is experienced with taking hits, throws, stumbles and tumbles. The boy can roll with the punches.

Perhaps that is why his smile never faded during his wrestling tournament. Despite a crowd of ferocious, vocal parents and antsy young wrestlers all gathered tightly in a middle school gym on a warm Saturday morning, Colin seemed pretty chipper. Or maybe, donning a wrestling uniform and getting a chance to step on the gymnasium floor, Colin just appreciated a chance to be in the limelight.

Whatever the reason, it was a joy to see him look so happy.
