My Best Friend

This photo is the first photo my sister and I took during our trip to Spain back in 2000 or 2001. Kim is the glamorous looking one on the left and I'm the one with the caterpillar eyebrows. A lot has changed since then but I'm happy that some things-like our friendship-haven't.

I've said before that one of the best things about having a sister is you get a best friend for life. Sure, Kim and I have had our fair share of fights. Once, she hurdled a plastic ladle that came with my crockpot at me and another time I slammed her finger in a door frame. We had some major brawls over whether or not I promised to rubbed her feet. But despite our squabbles and the miles that have sometimes separated us, I've always counted on the fact that Kim is my best bud.

She sent the best greeting cards to me in college and braided me friendship bracelets when we were kids. Kim and I used to watch So You Think You Can Dance religiously and when we grew tired of that, she introduced me to Flight of the Condors. Kim took me to see Amy Grant and Barenaked Ladies back in both their heyday and last Saturday night, we watched bands pay tribute to David Bowie in Santa Fe. When we ate dinner later that night, I remarked how great it was for it to be just the two us. Kim has a family of her own now and there's isn't a lot of times that she can steal away. Despite all the time that has passed when it was just me and her -sitting in that crowded restaurant and then the drive home just talking and laughing about nothing important - it felt as though no time had passed and nothing had changed. It was just me and my best bud again.
