Let's Go to the Movies!
I love summer. Not only because the sun stays out longer or it isn't necessary to wear socks outside but because there is a sort of freedom that comes with the season.
Routines are thrown to the wind and vacations are taken, the great outdoors are explored, community events are attended.
Summer gives you permission to be extravagant and I took part in an extravagance today - I watched a movie with my sister and her family.
The last time I watched a movie with my sister and two of her children it was "Where the Wild Things Are." It didn't go over very well. The huge monsters scared my sister's daughter and her oldest son was restless. He jumped from one row of seats to another.
This time it was different. Today was the first day of summer vacation and my niece and nephew were ready to embrace their new-found freedom. My nephew was dressed in his summer togs but it was my niece who really sparkled. She wore an emerald green sequined tutu from an earlier ballet recital and blue flip flops.
The movie we saw was "Kun-Fu Panda 2." The movie was in 3-D so we all got a pair of special glasses. They were plastic with thick, black frames. Glancing down our row in the movie theater, we looked like an assembly of intellectuals of all ages.
"Kun-Fu Panda 2" is a hoot and sitting in an air-conditioned room on a summer afternoon certainly feels decadent. Holding my nephew's box of Dots candy, I would occasionally get a whiff of the gummy candy's sweet, citrus smell. And I could hear the airy, bubbly noise coming from my niece and nephew's straws as they tried to capture the less drops of their slushy drinks.
As we walked out to our cars, I realized going to the movies is a real treat when you are a kid but unlike some childhood extravagances that fade as you get older, this is one that never spoils.
