Season of change

It's the season for change - a time to start a new chapter in life while also concluding the previous one. Everyone seems to be experiencing some sort of significant transition. A good friend of mine recently graduated from college and I ended my seven-year-long career in journalism. Even my five-year-old niece experienced a profound change. She graduated from pre-school.
I went to her pre-school graduation this week to see this moment. All the little graduates wore white baseball caps that they had artfully decorated with various stamps. They performed a song with some assistance from their teacher and received a large certificate that documented their achievement.
All the parents sitting in the audience took pride in this occasion. They wore huge smiles and offered congratulations to the newest class of kindergarteners. Looking at the parents' faces, I suddenly realized that moving onto kindergarten is a huge feat. Kindergarten is the start of everything; the kick off to many years of education. But it is also a conclusion to infant- and toddler-hood. From now on this pre-school graduating class will begin the process of growing up.
While this may very well have drawn a tear from the older members of the audience, the pre-school grads seemed unfazed by the change. They handed over their certificates to their parents and jumped right back into the events of the day, eager to see what would happen next.
My neice. She is not wearing her graduation cap but the crown is very fitting.
